What did you take away from an FSAE Meet and Greet?

Technology… ain’t it grand? Being in the tech industry, I consider myself smarter-than-the-average-bear when it comes to new trends on the horizon. So when the opportunity to learn a thing or two arose with the CFL Meet and Greet, I thought (modestly) “What can this guy teach me that I don’t already know? I’ll go for the networking, possibly meet some new peeps, and MAYBE learn something.” Boy, did I learn something… I learned a lot of somethings!
‘Always go home’ Have your main web address as your anchor, and have all other media (Facebook, Twitter, etc) pointing people ‘home’. You own your ‘home’ on the web, and can manipulate your information/message however you’d like. You don’t own your facebook/twitter page, or your association’s facebook/twitter page. Facebook does, and it can delete at its own discretion. Yipes!
The thing that I love about the FSAE Meet & Greets is that no matter how much you THINK you know, you always learn something(s), respectively, and not from just the speaker. While Mr. Fournier was very informative, the attendees were able to expand on his points in the technology workshop. This was especially helpful for the less “techie” people in the group. Through analogies, examples, and good ol’ positive energy, I feel that all avenues were explored and explained. It was the networking highlight of my month!

Being the Executive Director and only employee of the Florida Aviation Trades Association I think carefully about events I attend. When I first saw the title I immediately put it on my calendar but procrastinated until the week before to register. I played a mental game of ping pong, can I be out of the office for all most a day or should I stay and take care of never ending tasks. Well, I’m glad I decided to go. It was a very informative event.
Finding ways to better manage my time and still be effective for the Association in social media marketing has been a struggle. We have a website, Facebook page and a Twitter account. Trying to keep up with all of these has not been easy but thanks to Derek Fournier, Principal at Plain Sight Strategy Group, Inc I found ways to make it easier and more productive.
Previously, I had thought this form of marketing too time-consuming for me but now I am coming around to better understand how to use it effectively. The hands-on workshop with each participant at a computer made the technology easier to understand. Other attendees shared ideas and my only negative issue is I wish it could have lasted longer. I met some new people who I know I will consider friends.
FSAE and the Central Florida group organized a great event and our hosts and sponsorship provided a very worthwhile event. FSAE and the Central Florida group organized a great event and our hosts and sponsorship provided a very worthwhile event. Sometimes you just have to leave the office!

I had the pleasure of attending the FSAE Tallahassee Meet & Greet (#TallyMG for the Twitter crowd) on Friday, March 4, 2011. This was my first Meet & Greet as an official member and second one overall. FSAE does not disappoint when it comes to great opportunities for networking and learning.
Mr. Tom Derzypolski’s (@tderzy) presentation, “Connecting in a Streaming World,” walked us through the traditional communications model, explained how it has changed and gave us a roadmap to aid in our discovery of how we can better connect with our members. I had quite a few takeaways from Tom’s presentation but I’ll tease you with the top three:
Timing: When are your members receiving your message? Are you delivering it at the most effective time?
Delivery: Are you delivering your message through the most effective medium(s)? You need to use a broader brushstroke to be most effective. Do not just concentrate on one form of delivery as your member base currently consists of four generations of workers in the current workplace model.
Develop a Plan: In order to be able to track and know if what you are doing is working, you need to have a plan. Create your plan, deploy your plan, assess your plan, make adjustments to your plan, re-deploy your plan and keep the circle going to make sure that you are listening to what your members want, how they want it and when they want it. Remember, when you do it and how you do it is what really matters when connecting and engaging with your members.
I’d like to say a big thank you again to GEICO, American Audio Visual, Association Studios, and Mr. Tom Derzypolski (@tderzy), BowStern Communications for their roles in making this a successful event.

Thank you again to our sponsors Chris Minotti with the Orlando Lake Mary Marriott, Steven Ryals with the Seminole County CVB and Robert Hopkins with the Rivership Romance.
As we out for our three hour tour the great Facilitator Tom Morrison began our topic of Engaging, Recruitment and Retention of your members. Here were my 3 key points:
- Engage: What are the 3 benefits that your organization has to offer and do it the BEST!
- Recruit: Consider future members and what we can do for them in terms of incentives, member benefits, advocacy etc.
- Retention: Keep current with the latest technology and trends and focus on what your organization CAN DO for its members. Make sure to contact your members/clients at least three times a year
In today's world everyone needs to stand out from the rest and take that extra step. We all know how to do it; we just get wrapped up in the hustle of the day to day. Take a breath, enjoy the moment and think, “what can I do to create a world where our members cannot picture their professions without our organization?”

On January 21st I had the pleasure of attending the FSAE Central Florida Meet & Greet on the Rivership Romance . . . No it wasn’t the “Love Cruise” but pretty darn close. Honestly the weather couldn’t have been worse and I even thought about not going that morning. Busy, rainy, dark, and just one of those days.
Well, what a great way to turn off the gloom with the energy that flowed. It was a wonderful way to get closer to those I know in FSAE, get to know better the people I don’t, have some fun along the way, and come back to work with great new take-away ideas to apply at my association. The format, with spirited roundtable discussions, was a wonderful way to supplement the information filled presentation. Thanks to the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary, the Seminole County CVB, the Rivership Romance, and the FSAE Central Florida Committee for making this happen. Sharing, talking, learning and networking are what it is all about for me and the FSAE Central Florida Meet and Greet’s are great for that. Thanks for helping me keep my Members happy! I can’t wait until the next one.
