Speaker: Elizabeth Engel There’s no bigger waste than investing resources working on the wrong thing. Lean start-up methodology, a development approach that requires articulating and testing assumptions, favors rapid experimentation over elaborate planning, relies on customer feedback over intuition, and encourages iterative design, has taken the business world by storm as a way of ensuring that you’re investing in the right thing. Using concrete examples of how associations are using lean start-up to innovate, you will learn to apply this technique in your own organization to eliminate waste, validate your learning, and innovate faster and more successfully.
Participants will understand the key principles behind lean startup methodology and see how it differs from lean six sigma process improvement. Participants will hear concrete examples of how associations are using lean startup to innovate. Participants will have the opportunity to apply lean startup through a table scenario exercise, working from insight through defining the problem/question to creating a minimum viable product and figuring out how to test it.

Speaker: Leah Wiley
While uplifting our communities, nonprofits often drive so hard toward their missions that they burn out their staff. This comes from under-valuing governance, staff training, and fund development. What if we lived in a world where nonprofits were so well-run, so well-staffed, and so well-funded that generations of creatives clamored to build their careers in the nonprofit sector, above the typical medical, legal, and corporate industries? I believe we can create that world by helping nonprofits develop a strong culture that values structure, pours into its staff, and strengthens its relational fundraising strategies.
- Strengthen staff culture and reverse high-turnover trends
- Learn best practices on organizational structure and governance
- Deepen the connection between strong relational fundraising campaigns and staff retention
